Rep. Bird attends Mt. Orab Village Council Meeting
Representative Bird attended the Village of Mt. Orab's council meeting on January 27 to hear concerns from residents about the Village's plan for its mega site. He listened to public commentary for 2 hours in addition to interacting with residents in attendance.
Many expressed concerns about the potential use of the mega site and expressed extreme concern about local elected leaders using Non-Disclosure Agreements. Rep Bird supports the authority of these elected leaders to decide what is best for the community but also supports transparency when these leaders work with their community to make decisions and develop good policy.
Based on the testimony of those in attendance, Rep Bird is working with interested parties to craft language for a bill that would address community concerns.
House Bill 393 - Legislation to Remove Barriers for Reintegration
Representative Bird is a co-sponsor of House Bill 393, legislation that would require community-based correctional facilities and programs in Ohio to assist individuals in custody in obtaining a state-issued identification card prior to their release.
Under the bill, community-based correctional facilities would be required to begin the identification process within a reasonable time before an individual completes programming. For inmates without valid identification, such correctional facilities would assist in the compiling of appropriate applications and documents prior to submitting completed materials to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
House Bill 393 is a continuation of efforts that began in the previous General Assembly, which required this program for the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections and the Department of Youth services. Securing an essential form of identification is necessary to access housing, employment, and other critical services. Expanding this program to community-based correctional facilities aims to facilitate a smoother reentry process for over 7,000 incarcerated Ohioans.
House Bill 393 now moves to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
Brown County Chamber of Commerce
Representative Bird was honored to be apart of the Brown County Chamber of Commerce annual breakfast. Freedom, opportunity, and continued economic development in the community will continue to make southern Ohio a growing area.
