We are Working to Lower Property Taxes in Ohio
The Ohio House passed two bills this week that will bring property tax relief to all Ohioans.
PASSED: House Bill 186 saves Ohio property owners nearly $1.7 billion over the next three years by establishing a new Inflation Cap Credit that prevents increases in school district property taxes from exceeding the rate of inflation. The initiative also includes an appropriation holding Ohio school districts harmless for actual losses over this appraisal period compared to their current property tax collections, which will help schools that are not up for reappraisal or reevaluation this year offset any actual revenue losses.
This legislation will protect homeowners from surprise hikes in their property tax bills when they live in a district that is on the 20-mill floor.
PASSED: House Bill 335 similarly caps increases in inside millage collections to the rate of inflation. The bill requires county budget commissions to adjust the rate of each inside millage levy so that it does not grow by more than the sum of the three previous years of inflation. This happens during the county’s sexennial reappraisal or triennial update. The net effect of this provision totals between $621 million and $763 million in property tax relief over the next three years.
Both House Bill 186 and 335 now head to the Senate for further consideration.
We are Working to Regulate use of Marijuana and Intoxicating Hemp Products
The Ohio House passed Senate Bill 56, legislation updating Ohio’s marijuana laws, ensuring protections for children and addressing the issue of intoxicating hemp.
The bill passed with bipartisan support and preserves the legal adult-use marijuana provisions approved by voters in Issue 2 (2023), while also working to promote public safety.
Health Committee Testimony on H.B. 172
This week in House Health Committee, members from Mission America, Ohio Value Voters, and Protect Ohio Children provided proponent testimony for House Bill 172, legislation that will prohibit minors from receiving mental health treatment without their parents' knowledge and permission.
William Pitsenbarger Memorial
I recently had the opportunity to present a commendation honoring the life and sacrifices made by William H. Pitsenbarger.
Born and raised in Piqua, Ohio, Pitsenbarger was a United States Air Force Pararescueman who flew on almost 300 rescue missions during the Vietnam War to aid downed soldiers and pilots.
We are forever thankful for his service to our country.
