Bird's Co-Sponsored Bill on E-Verify Act Passes Ohio House
State Representative Bird is pleased to announce that the E-Verify Workforce Integrity Act, or H.B. 246, passed the Ohio House on Wednesday. This legislation would ensure all workers hired in Ohio for covered construction projects are legally authorized to work in the United States.
Under the legislation, all contractors, subcontractors, and labor brokers working on public works projects for state agencies and political subdivisions must use the federal E-Verify program to confirm employee eligibility. This requirement also applies to private-sector contractors in nonresidential construction.
The bill also empowers the Attorney General to investigate suspected violations, issue notices of violation, and pursue enforcement through the courts if necessary.
Penalties include fines, disqualification from state contracts for up to two years, and license suspension or revocation, especially when unauthorized workers are knowingly employed.
House Bill 246 now advances to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
Rep. Bird Provided Testimony for H.B. 114
Representatives Bird and Kevin Ritter provided sponsor testimony for their bill, H.B. 114, during Senate Education Committee this week.
This legislation would require public schools to admit any child into kindergarten who will be five years old by September 30th of the upcoming school year. This bill creates uniformity across the state for the required age of a child to enroll in kindergarten.
House Bill 114 passed the Ohio House and is now being considered in the Senate.
Congressional Term Limit Champion
Representative Bird received an award this week and was recognized as a 'Champion of term limits for Congress' by the U.S. Term Limits Association.
Happy Father's Day
Representative Bird wishes his father, and all of the dads in his district a very Happy Father's Day.
