In The District
Greetings! My name is Janae Myers, and I have the honor of being Rep. Click’s new Legislative Aide. I am excited to share what Representative Click has been working on this week!
Representative Gary Click joined Richland County Officials to advocate for safe driving in work zones on Wednesday, at the Richland County Fairgrounds.
A part of National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, this event was hosted by the Richland County Engineer’s Office and the Ohio Department of Transportation, and supported by local legislators, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Ohio Laborers Employers Cooperation, the Education Trust Ohio Contractors Association, and the American Traffic Safety Services Association.
Representative Click spoke about the ever-increasing threat of work zone accidents, and the tragic death of Trent Galloway who died last year after being hit by a driver in a work zone outside where he was employed. Mr. Galloway was only 20 years old and was standing in a work zone outside of a Highway Department vehicle when he was hit by a driver.
Representative Click shared his hope that his work zone safety bill, House Bill 82, will become law and address the ever-increasing issue of work zone deaths. Over the past five years, there have been 104 work zone deaths in Ohio. There have been 29 additional work zone injuries, and there are a plethora of ways that our state can better protect Ohio’s construction zone workforce.
Wednesday’s Work Zone Safety Event had a profound impact on those who attended, and left attendees hoping for the passage of House Bill 82, which has the potential to save countless lives and better protect our workers.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with Trent and his family, other families, and communities of those who have lost loved ones in work zone safety accidents.
House Bill 82 awaits a second hearing in the House Public Safety Committee.
