2024 Dog Licensing Season is Underway

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Dog licenses can now be purchased from your Franklin County Auditor’s office without penalty through January 31.

This year, the dog license renewal season is returning to the pre-COVID guidelines of December 1 through January 31, 2024. After the January 31 deadline, the cost to purchase a license doubles.

One year, three year, and permanent licenses can always be purchased online at doglicense.franklincountyohio.gov, or at the Auditor’s office license counter, 373 S. High St., 21st Floor in downtown Columbus. The counter is open Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 4 pm.

The office is also offering licensing at expanded locations across the county, including at pet vaccination clinics, the Franklin County Dog Shelter, and at other community events.

“Dog licensing is part of responsible pet ownership, and your Auditor’s office is making the licensing process easy and convenient for the county’s dog owners,” Stinziano said.  “I encourage all dog owners to protect your pup and ensure they’re properly licensed.”

Owners can also change addresses, download forms and update dog information via the online licensing system.

In addition to being required by state law, dog licensing ensures that a dog has been vaccinated against rabies, which is required in Franklin County. It also ensures that any lost dog is returned quickly to their owners. License fees help support the Franklin County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center.

The dog license season kick-off coincides with a ceremony this past week to celebrate the winners of the 2023 Me & My Pal drawing contest, which promotes the benefits of licensing dogs. For the contest, K-6th grade students from around Franklin County submitted drawings of themselves and their dogs to the Auditor’s office. Winners have their drawings featured in a calendar produced by the Auditor’s office. To get a free calendar, visit the Auditor’s office website
