Consumer Alert: Dollar General Stores Fail Follow-up Inspections
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano reminded consumers to remain vigilant when shopping after five area Dollar General stores failed a second inspection one week after failing an initial inspection of price scanners.
Weights and Measures inspectors visited the stores seven days after an initial inspection found scanned prices were more expensive than the listed price.
The following Dollar General locations failed the follow-up inspection:
- 5001 Chatterton Rd., Truro Township
- 4868 W. Broad St., Prairie Township
- 618 Schrock Rd., Westerville
- 3065 Broadway, Grove City
- 3170 Lambert Rd., Pleasant Township
Among the examples of incorrect scanner prices from the second inspections: Goldfish Snacks that should be $3.75 scanned at $4.50; Dove Conditioner that should have been $7 scanned in at $8; Officehub Liquid Highlighters that should be $6 scanned at $8; and DG Health Electrolyte Solutions that should cost $3.75 scanned at $4.50.
“Consumers should remain cautious when shopping and make sure you’re paying the correct price; every penny counts” Auditor Stinziano said. “Auditor’s office inspectors will be vigilant and out in the community checking scanners and continuing our work protecting consumers from predatory corporations like Dollar General."
There have been instances of incorrect scanned prices at several other Dollar General stores across the country. In Butler County, the Ohio Attorney General filed a consumer protection lawsuit after inspections this past October found all 20 Dollar General stores there failed inspection. In 2019, Dollar General settled a Consumer Protection Act case in Vermont for similar mispricing inaccuracies.
The Ohio Department of Agriculture, which oversees Weights and Measures for the state, has been notified of the failed inspections. Consumers can report instances of fraud regarding this or any other consumer protection issue to the Auditor's office Fraud Protection Line at 614.525.SCAM.
