Auditor’s Office Partners with OSU College of Social Work’s Age-Friendly Columbus and Franklin County

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Franklin County Commissioners approved a contract with Age-Friendly Columbus and Franklin County, a program of The Ohio State University’s College of Social Work, that will help Auditor Michael Stinziano’s Office improve appraisal practices for older adults ahead of the 2023 Sexennial Reappraisal.

Age-Friendly Columbus and Franklin County will work in partnership with the Auditor’s office to analyze data to understand housing challenges faced by older adults and propose solutions to help them remain in their homes. Age-Friendly will also engage the older adult community to seek policy recommendations that can help with housing issues.

“As we begin preparations for the general reappraisal, I am committed to listening to older adults and ensuring our appraisals are fair and equitable,” Stinziano said. “We want to make sure with our current hot housing market that our older neighbors are able to keep their homes and enjoy their lives in their own neighborhoods.”

Katie White, Director of Age-Friendly Columbus and Franklin County added, “Listening to older adults to understand the challenges they are experiencing and ideas for solutions is the crux of our work. We look forward to this partnership as it will increase our ability to make Franklin County a model place for older adults to age in place.”

The contract comes after the Auditor’s office just completed the Triennial Update, which updated property values for every parcel in the county to keep them in line with the real estate market. Because the current market is rising steadily, many residents and businesses saw increases in their property values.

The new partnership will use information gleaned from the Triennial Update to improve practices and processes for older adults and all Franklin County residents and businesses in the upcoming Sexennial Reappraisal, which occurs every six years. Preparations are already underway for the reappraisal, which involves a full reappraisal of every property in the county.

The new contract with Age-Friendly will run through December 31, 2021.
