Fraud Alert: Auditor Stinziano Warns Property Owners about Fake Letters
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano urged property owners Wednesday to be cautious when signing and mailing important documents after fraudulent letters supposedly from the state of Ohio were received by some county residents, which could result in multiple consumers claiming ownership of the same property.
The fake letter, which attempts to mimic an official correspondence and uses the state seal, claims that there are mistakes on the property owner’s deed and asks them to sign and send a new “quit-claim deed.”
Consumers are advised that the Franklin County Auditor’s office does not send representatives door-to-door to sign deeds.
“If there is any question about the authenticity of a document concerning your property don’t hesitate to give the Auditor’s office a call. We will do everything we can to protect homeowners from unscrupulous criminals,” Stinziano said.
Anyone with questions can call the Franklin County Auditor’s office at (614) 525-HOME.
