Human Service Chamber
Michael Corey, Executive Director
- Six reasons why this will be a very challenging year for Human Services and non-profits:
- Demand is increasing
- Resources are decreasing
- Costs are going up, and will likely continue with planned tariffs
- Economy is slowing
- Uncertainty is increasing
- Workforce is tight
- Federal funding streams are about to change dramatically.
- Three key areas to watch:
- Grant funding - the new administration is attempting to freeze or eliminate active federal grants for numerous nonprofits across the US. Current grants are being reviewed to ensure that they are consistent with national interest.
- Reconciliation - a mechanism to pass spending measures out of Congress. For example, the House majority recently passed a budget framework. The framework forecasts more than one trillion dollars to cut three key programs - Medicaid, SNAP and school meals.
- Federal agencies are shrinking or attempted to be eliminated altogether. Key Health and Human services agencies are being reprioritized and will change how funded partners that work with these organizations can do their job.
- Good news - many Franklin County agencies and partners have great relationships with local, state and federal government agencies. We will rally together to work through the changes that are coming.
