Deer Park Schools Summer Updates:

August 1, 2021

Jr./Sr. High School

What's New at District Office?

K-8 ELA Curriculum Adoption approved by the Board of Education

On July 20, the Deer Park Board of Education approved a new curriculum for English Language Arts grades K-8. The new curriculum for grades K-5 is called "Being a Writer." Grades 6-8 adopted "Into Literature."

The K-8 teachers have been working tirelessly over the past year and a half to find the best curriculum and resources for their students and we are confident we have landed on the best. While we are certain teachers will be communicating to families about the new curriculum once school resumes, you may also find more information about each program here:

PTO Seeking Football Concession Volunteers

Again this year, the PTO and Athletic Boosters are working in the concession stand for the home football games and we need your help. We are in need of at least 10 people per game to take 3 hours to get drinks, prep burgers and hot dogs, bag popcorn, assemble nachos or work a window. Please consider signing up for one or more games. Volunteering is easy and actually fun!

Thank you for supporting our community and volunteering to help in the concession stand!

Students can enter the cafeteria on Sunday, August 8, from the courtyard entrance. Please contact Director of Communications Jake Snyder at snyder.j@dpccsd.org with any questions.

Reminder about Class Schedules

Our counselors are continuing to refine student schedules throughout the summer, and they will become available on Schoology about a week before school starts. Students will also be able to access their schedules during the August 13th Back to School Bash.

Tours for Students!

If your Junior High student was 100% virtual last year, then they may need to learn about the important locations in our building. Coming up on Aug. 4th at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Jason Spelic, school counselor for grades 7-9, will host tours for incoming 7th and 8th graders. New to the district Junior High students are also welcome! The tours should last about 30 minutes and there will be opportunities to ask questions. Parents and guardians do not need to attend, but we do ask that you RSVP by calling Jason Spelic or Melissa Vickrey, guidance secretary, at 891-0010 to let us know if you are attending and at what time. If you are a new-to-the-district HS student and would like to attend, please feel free to contact us as well.

What's New at Amity Elementary?

A Message from Amity Principal Josh Drouhard

Dear Amity Families,

I called Tony Kriener, a member of our custodial team, down to ask him to share some of the things that our custodians work on over the summer. In talking to Tony, I got to hear the pride he takes in his job, just as he would his own home. He stated, “I care about my school, and the longer I can keep it looking nice, the longer it will last.” His pride in Amity spills over into his love for the community he lives in. He truly lives and breaths Deer Park and works by the mantra, “I’m here to serve, this is my job”

Here is Tony’s description of the work he and his teammates do over the summer in his own words:

Not much is talked about behind the scenes at Amity Elementary but the custodians at Amity work tremendously hard! During the summer break, the custodians go into a deep clean mode by wiping down and scrubbing every room with disinfectant. They pull all the desks, tables, chairs, bookcases, and miscellaneous objects out of each room while they scrub the walls and floors. Then they have to put the room back together. The bathrooms are deep cleaned and disinfected by power washing all surface areas. Each custodian plays a vital role in creating a clean and safe school for our students.

While this gives you a glimpse into what their job is like during the summer, there is no way it could cover everything they do. I’d like to thank Tony Kriener, Al Godbey, Tony Lay, Tom Reno and Rick Greene for all their hard work this summer! Our building will be shining for our students on the first day of school.

Take Care,
Josh

Teacher Meet and Greet

Amity Elementary Teacher Meet and Greet will take place on Monday, August 16th from 4-6 p.m. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students to see their new classroom, meet their teachers, and drop off supplies. As a reminder, Amity homeroom teacher assignments will be announced the week of August 9th.

Amity Elementary Kindergarten Staggered Start Information

Dear Kindergarten Families,

We are excited to return to all-day kindergarten at Amity Elementary School for the 2021-2022 school year!

The first day of school is an exciting time for our teachers, students, and families, especially our kindergarteners. In order to best serve our students, and help them become acclimated to their teacher, classroom and new school, we will have a "staggered start" for only our kindergarten students.

Students with last names beginning with A-L will report to school on Tuesday, August 17, but stay home on Wednesday, August 18. Students with last names beginning with M-Z will have their first day on Wednesday, August 18. All kindergarten students will report to school on Thursday, August 19th.

We hope that by doing this, we will get our Kindergarten students off to a great start to the year!

Thanks,
Josh
