Deer Park Tabs Alex Heusmann as Boys Basketball Coach

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Deer Park High School has named Alex Heusmann as the new leader of the boys basketball program, pending Board approval, Athletic Director Greg Huster announced Friday afternoon.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring Alex into the Wildcat family,” Huster said. “He brings tremendous energy and a wealth of success at both the college and high school level.”

Heusmann joins the Wildcats following three seasons as an assistant coach at Harrison High School where he helped lead those Wildcats to their best record in nearly two decades in 2020. Under the tutelage of Head Coach Andy Marx, Heusmann helped the program improve from just four victories in 2018 to 12 wins in 2020.

“It’s been an exciting week for me,” Heusmann said. “I can’t thank all of the people who helped me get here enough. I’m looking forward to meeting the student body and the community members in the coming weeks.”

Prior to his time in Harrison, Heusmann spent three seasons as an assistant at Hillsdale College, where the Chargers enjoyed three consecutive winning seasons, three Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament appearances, and a trip to the NCAA Division II national tournament in 2018.

Heusmann’s first coaching experience came under one of the most well-respected high school basketball coaches in Southwest Ohio in Oak Hills High School’s Mike Price. Price has amassed 430 wins in 29 years with the Highlanders.

Heusmann is no stranger to high school basketball success. As a player for two seasons under Dan Fleming at LaSalle High School, Heusmann and the Lancers went a staggering 45-6, including a pair Greater Catholic League South titles and two trips to the OHSAA Regional Finals.

“Alex has experienced high school basketball at the highest level as both a player and a coach,” Huster said. “We know he is going to use all of that knowledge to bring the Deer Park boys program back to the top of the CHL.”

Heusmann graduated from Mouth St. Joseph University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and completed his Masters in Special Education from Mount St. Joe’s in 2019.

“I want to thank the hiring committee for giving me this opportunity,” Heusmann said. “We’re going to create a program that the community will be proud of and that the players love playing in!”
