Amity Elementary

What's New?

From the Desk of Mr. Drouhard

Dear Amity Families,

It was an eventful week around Amity. As we turned from January into February, the colors of the hallway switched from icy blue to a warm red in preparation for Valentines day. There was talk in the classroom of groundhog day and whether spring was coming, as well grade level celebrations for the 100th day of school! It was a great first week of February!

Take Care,
Josh

Weekly Spotlight

In Miss Longwell's second grade class, students became entrepreneurs last week. Each student created a good to “sell” in the classroom. They worked on creating store fronts, slogans, and a commercial. Their products were made out of paper and took a lot of hard work to create. The students had so much fun buying and selling their goods!

Virtual Spotlight

Amity virtual learners had a special week learning about life in other countries around the world. They learned about schools, languages, music, landmarks, and currency! They also got to write to 3 classes in different countries. Our K-5 learners now have penpal classes in Saudi Arabia, Nova Scotia and Melbourne! In our letters, students are sharing and learning about school life, weather, pets, foods, time zones and so many other day-to-day parts of life in our countries. They are all excited to continue to connect and learn from each other!

Parking On Galbraith Road During Dismissal

We need your help by not parking on Galbraith Road in front Amity. We are running into problems with Deer Park buses and daycare buses not being able to get to their pick-up spots because cars are parked and waiting for students. I understand there is a lot of traffic around the building at the end of the day, but please help us by using our carpool lines or parking on the streets surrounding Amity and walking up to get your child. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Remote Learning Day- Thursday February 11th

Just a reminder that we will have a remote learning day on Thursday, February 11th due to vaccine administration. This remote learning day will include our Amity preschool and kindergarten students.

Spring Conferences: Change In Date To Thursday, March 11th

Our conferences have been condensed and moved to Thursday, March 11th from 1:00-8:00. With this quick change in dates, we will not be releasing conference times this weekend as was originally announced. We will work to get them in the Amity minute next week. Due to COVID19, we will be meeting virtually or by phone once again. There will be no school on Thursday, March 11th because of conference night.

No School: Monday, February 15th

Just a reminder that there is no school for PreK-12th grade on Monday, February 15th. School is off that day as it is President’s Day.

No School- Friday, March 12th

There will be no school for students on Friday March 12th, as this has become an entire teachers records day to end 3rd quarter.

In Case You Missed It

Grading With A Return To In Person Learning

I wanted to make parents and students aware that with a return to 5 day a week in person learning we will be grading as we did prior to the pandemic. If we are able to make it the remainder of the quarter in this model, our grade card will reflect a percentage grade instead of a checkmark system. In the event that we have to go back to hybrid learning the check mark system will be reinstituted.

Writing Circles Opportunity

Please see the flyer below for an opportunity for students in grades 4-6 to get involved in a writing group put on by Women Writing for a change.

Youth Circles

Outdoor Recess

With a return to cold temperatures, please remember to send your child to school with appropriate outdoor attire for recess. We are currently going outside whenever the “feels like” temperature is 25 degrees or above. This gives our students time to burn some energy and allows for a time that our students can take a socially distanced mask break. Our recesses are 30 minutes in length this year so it is important that our students be comfortable while they are outside.

Attendance

Please remember to call our attendance line (513-891-2414) or email Betty Jung (jung.b@dpccsd.org), our attendance secretary, if your student is going to be out.

This is especially important with the number of people that are either required to quarantine by the health department, or quarantining on their own accord.    We need to be aware of these situations outside of school so that we can appropriately mark the attendance and provide guidance from the district if necessary.   Thanks for all your help!
