Deer Park Launches "30 Days of Tech"

30 days tech

Did you know that Deer Park Jr/Sr High School has a set of online courses called the Wildcat Virtual Academy, which allows students to take a variety of electives online? Did you know Amity Elementary and Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School each have 3D printers that are used in lessons?

From Lego MindStorms to a new eSports after-school club, Deer Park Schools is on the cutting edge of new technology and we are working hard to provide our students with experiences that will prepare them for the jobs of the future.

However, we also know that there are so many opportunities that the community may not know are available for Deer Park students. That’s why we are launching “30 Days of Tech.” Through immersive social media, video and written stories, over the next 30 days, we'll take a deep dive into all the exciting things that are happening in the world of tech at Deer Park Schools.

We’ll discuss a variety of topics from Class Dojo—a classroom management and communications tool—to our ventures into virtual reality to the Amity video announcements presented to students each week. Every day, you’ll learn something new about what we’re doing in the ever-changing landscape of school technology.

We hope you enjoy taking in all the ways we are using technology throughout the district. We’ll be using the hashtag #30DaysofTech and the banner above to keep getting out the news.

Welcome to “30 Days of Tech!”

Project Management 201 Students Open Semester with Kickoff Luncheon

PM201

It has been almost five years since Deer Park Schools and the Project Management Institute Southwest Ohio Chapter began building a curriculum for Project Management 101 and 201 under the program architect Doug Arthur of Transform Consulting.

On Wednesday, the program took another giant leap forward, as project managers from Fifth Third Bank and Proctor and Gamble joined the students for a kickoff luncheon on Fountain Square at Via Vite to open up the semester.

“The reason we are having this special lunch meeting is because this semester’s PM 201 class will engage 10 professional project managers from two of Cincinnati’s most distinguished companies—Procter & Gamble and Fifth Third Bank,” PM 201 Instructor Adam Gergen said. “We are celebrating the incredible investments P&G and Fifth Third Bank are making in Deer Park High School and the Deer Park Project Management Academy by allowing their PM experts to work with us.”

For the first time this semester, 10 project management professionals will team up as VIP coaches for the students, connecting over the course of the semester in order to help with the completion of a project, which will come to fruition by the end of the year. Projects include the Deer Park Walk-a-Thon, Veteran care packages and a redesign of the Deer Park baseball dugouts.

The students work in teams of three or four, and are paired with a VIP Project Manager from Fifth Third and P&G.

“We are kicking off a new chapter in the life of Deer Park Project Management Academy with the inclusion of professional PM coaches from Fifth Third Bank and Procter & Gamble,” Arthur told the students as the luncheon began. “The Deer Park Career Academies only exists because of the partnerships formed between your school and the interested companies and professional organizations who are willing to invest time in all of you.”

The students also heard from Via Vite Owner and Head Chef Christian Pietoso and PMI Southwest Ohio Chapter President, Andy Burns.

“Working with the Southwest Ohio Chapter of PMI, Deer Park Career Academies has become one of the first high schools in the U.S. to offer students the chance to sit for the prestigious Certified Associate Project Manager exam when they graduate,” Burns advised the students. “Attaining your Certified Associate Project Manager certification -- or CAPM -- is a huge bump in the recognition of your expertise in the job market, as well as the money you are paid.”

celebrate excellence

It's that time of year again where we get to celebrate our wonderful staff. Each year we participate in the Celebrate Excellence event where we ask for nominations for our outstanding teachers.

The Hamilton County Education Foundation will recognize “Educators of the Year” from nearly every public school district in the Cincinnati area. Each individual school district submits their own top educator (including teachers, counselors, administrators, psychologists, etc.) to be honored at the 2019 Celebrate Excellence breakfast. This event brings together K-12 education, university, business and civic leaders to pay tribute to this impressive group of educators.

Characteristics of an excellent educator might include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Demonstrates a high commitment toward student achievement

  • Is seen by others as genuine and sincere
  • Makes a positive difference in the classroom, school, and community
  • Demonstrates empathy for everyone
  • Strives to improve personally and professionally, and encourages students to as well

MAP Test Results

Deer Park Jr/Sr High School uses the MAP tests predominately for grades 7 - 10 to evaluate student progress throughout the school year.  By testing fall, winter, and spring, we can see if a student is making consistent growth over the school year. We recently received the results for our winter testing; the test reports will show a student’s progress from the start of the school year until January.  These reports will be made available to pick up during our PLAN NOW! Conferences coming up Feb. 28th and March 1st. However, if you would like to have your students’ report sooner, please contact Melissa Vickery in the guidance office at 891-0010.

2019-2020 Scheduling

Students in grades 7 - 11 are almost done with the scheduling process for the 2019-2020 school year.  If your son or daughter has not completed their course selection form, please contact the guidance office at 891-0010.  For high school students, the Academic Course Planner can be found on the Deer Park CCR website; click HERE to view. Finally, paper copies are also available.  Please know that the staff and counselors are there to help your student each step of the way as they go through this important process.  If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

ACT Prep

John Baylor Prep is a free resource available to Deer Park Students preparing for the ACT. Below, you will find information about what John Baylor Prep can assist with. More information can be obtained by emailing Corrie Madden (madden.c@dpccsd.org).

Now 12 Sessions, split into two 20-minute videos.  You’ll now have the flexibility to show the ACT Classic course in 40-minute sessions, as before, or 20-minute sessions. Students take a quiz and do a homework assignment after the second video in each session. Online section tests are available after each subject.

The (optional) Strategies for the Writing Section video and worksheet now appears as Session 13.

Full Online ACT Test | In addition to online section tests, student now have the option to take a full ACT test online after session 10.

Subject Related Resources:

English | The Grammar Rules have been refined and consolidated to 19 Rules! Simplicity, clarity, and higher scores correlate.

Math | We’ve added repeating decimals, scientific notation, basic trig identities, and a few other concepts that have all appeared recently on the test.

Reading | We’ve added a fourth Reading strategy to particularly help students who are racing to finish that final fourth passage. Now they can.

Science | In response to the ACT’s reduction in the number of science passages from seven to six, we’ve updated our strategy so that students exploit that extra time for each passage.

Naviance Student Information

Deer Park students grades 7 - 12 will continue to use the Naviance platform as part of their college and career readiness efforts.  While the look and name has changed, the link is still found by clicking on Naviance Family Connections on the main highschool website under Quick Links.  Your student's account will be their district email address and student ID number.  Students can also download the app to their phone. Please check out this great tool together.

College Application Tips

Start early. Set deadlines for completing essays, collecting recommendations and filling out forms a few weeks before they’re actually required.

Be consistent. Using the exact same name on all your forms makes things easier for admission officers. Decide if you want to use a shortened version of your legal name or your middle name, and then always use the same version. Switching names — going from Bill to Billy, for example — increases the odds that your materials will get misfiled.

Be careful. Careless mistakes on your application can hurt your chances of getting accepted. After you finish an application, put it aside for a day and then check it over for errors. If you can, have a teacher or parent proofread it as well. Save and review online applications before you submit them.

Alert your school. You need to let school officials know which colleges you’re applying to so they can send along your transcripts. The people you ask to write recommendation letters also need to know where you’re applying if they’re mailing the letters themselves.

Completing the Package

Don’t wait. Anything that needs to be mailed, including your application itself, should be sent in several weeks before it is due. This allows time for delivery and processing. Online materials should be sent weeks before the deadline as well.

Submit once. When you apply online, you’ll usually get an automated response saying your materials have been received. If you don’t, contact the college’s admission office. Don’t apply online again or mail in another application.

Keep copies. Make a copy of each piece of each application. Save personal identification numbers, passwords, canceled checks and notes or emails from admission officers. This documentation can save you if a problem arises.

Get confirmation. If you mail applications, put a stamped postcard addressed to your house in each package so admission officers can let you know that your materials arrived. The U.S. Post Office also offers a similar “return receipt” service. It may take a few weeks for confirmation cards to reach you.

If you get a notice saying something is missing, don’t panic. Just call the admission office and calmly ask what steps you can take. This is why you wisely saved copies of everything and sent in your application early!

Schoology Reminder
