From the Office of

College and Career Readiness

Need to Know By Grade Level

Seniors:
Seniors are working on completing college applications, asking teachers for letters of recommendations, meeting individually with Ms. Madden, and learning about the FAFSA.

The following colleges will be visiting Deer Park during X-bell:  University of Cincinnati, Ball State University, Xavier University, Wittenberg University, Ashland University, Bellarmine University, and Wright State University.  More will be added regularly.

Juniors:
Will be taking assessments during CCR to determine how their values and interests apply to potential careers.  Also, sign up is available for the PSAT (which will be administered at Deer Park HIgh School on October 10th). The assessment cost is $16, which is due to Mrs. Vickrey by the end of the day on September 28th.  Students will also be taking the PreACT on October 17th.

Sophomores:
Will be taking assessments during CCR that will explore how students interests correlate with potential job opportunities.  Also, sign up is available for the PSAT (which will be administered at Deer Park HIgh School on October 10th). The assessment cost is $16, which is due to Mrs. Vickrey by the end of the day on September 28th.  Students will also be taking the PreACT on October 17th.

Freshmen:
Will begin looking at the overall process of thinking about their college and career goals by evaluating their junior high years and processing what lies ahead in grades 10 - 12.  They will then complete and add onto a section in their Naviance account called My Game Plan.

Jr High:
Our 7th and 8th grader students will continue to explore their strengths and interests during the first part of the year through both the Naviance curriculum and TLC (Thriving Learning Communities).

7th grade students will learn how to use the Naviance platform and then identify what resources they have both in and out of school to help them be successful. 8th grade students will also identify those individuals in their school support network that can lend a hand.

PreACT Information for Sophomores and Juniors

All sophomores and juniors will taking the PreACT this year.  Previously, only juniors took the PreACT; however, to provide students with feedback earlier and to align with ACT best practices, we will be administering this valuable assessment to both sophomores and juniors this year.

Now 12 Sessions, split into two 20-minute videos.  You’ll now have the flexibility to show the ACT Classic course in 40-minute sessions, as before, or 20-minute sessions. Students take a quiz and do a homework assignment after the second video in each session. Online section tests are available after each subject.

The (optional) Strategies for the Writing Section video and worksheet now appears as Session 13.

Full Online ACT Test | In addition to online section tests, student now have the option to take a full ACT test online after session 10.

Subject Related Resources:

English | The Grammar Rules have been refined and consolidated to 19 Rules! Simplicity, clarity, and higher scores correlate.

Math | We’ve added repeating decimals, scientific notation, basic trig identities, and a few other concepts that have all appeared recently on the test.

Reading | We’ve added a fourth Reading strategy to particularly help students who are racing to finish that final fourth passage. Now they can.

Science | In response to the ACT’s reduction in the number of science passages from seven to six, we’ve updated our strategy so that students exploit that extra time for each passage.

Need to Know

ATTN: Fall Athletes/Band/Color Guard Members - Study Tables begin THIS WEEK

Study tables will begin this week for any athlete, band, or color guard member who has any combination of two or more Ds or Fs when grades are run. Study Table grades will be run at 3pm on Thursdays of weeks 2, 4, 6, and 8 of each quarter. This report run is final and will determine study table attendance requirements for the following two weeks. Study Tables will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30am-7:30am and again from 3:15pm-4:15pm. Students must attend two of the study table sessions each week in order to be eligible to participate in competition that weekend or band/color guard Friday night activities. Students and parents will be notified via email if they/their child will be required to participate in study tables. Even if a student’s grade(s) come up during the two week period, they must still attend study tables until the next grade report is run. This will only help them get further ahead, hopefully avoiding study tables in the future.
