Military-Connected Youth June Bulletin

Dear Military Family Liaisons,

Congratulations on the conclusion of the 2024-2025 school year. Even though school is out, this is a busy time for military families with moves to new duty stations and ongoing deployments. As a liaison, how do you communicate with your military families while school is out of session? 

The bulletin will not be published in July and returns in August. Meanwhile, take time to unwind and recharge for the upcoming school year. I wish you all a happy summer! 

Staffing Changes for the 2025-2026 School Year

If there are any staffing changes to your Military Family Liaison, principal, or superintendent over the summer, please notify us at Purplestar@education.ohio.gov. This allows us to keep our records up-to-date and provide timely communications to your school. 

Purple Star Rubrics

The Department’s Purple Star website now features rubrics that schools can use to prepare and review their Purple Star applications. Rubrics are available for both new and renewal applications.

Advisory Board Vacancy

The Purple Star Advisory Board would like to thank Chad Marzec of Liberty-Benton High School for his years of service to the advisory and his support of military-connected students.

The advisory is seeking a high school or career-technical level educator or administrator to fill the newly open position on the board. If interested, please complete this online application by June 30.

Purple Star Roundtables

This August, educators will have three opportunities to meet, network, and learn best practices for serving military-connected students during the Purple Star Roundtables. There are two in-person meetings and one online meeting. Click the links below to register for each meeting. Dates and locations are as follows:  

August 4 at 9:00 a.m. at the Warren County Career Center.

August 5 at 9:00 a.m. at Twinsburg High School.

August 6 at 1:00 p.m. Virtual Meeting.

Ohio Military Kids Summer Camps

Ohio Military Kids Camps provide positive development experiences for youth whose parents are deployed in military service, as well as opportunities for military-connected youth to connect, learn, and have fun in an outdoor setting.

Purple Star USA National Convening

Do you have an exciting program or event that supports military-connected students as part of your Purple Star program? Purple Star USA National Convening of Schools and Communities is seeking proposals for its fourth annual national convening. The deadline for proposal submissions has been extended to June 30.

Purple Star National Convening 2025 Flyer

The Purple Star USA National Convening of Schools and Communities will occur on Oct. 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This free, online event is an opportunity for supporters of military-connected youth from all levels to share best practices. Contact Jenn Davis with any questions.  

Ohio Teacher Leadership Summit

Register now for the 2025 Teacher Leadership Summit hosted by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. The Teacher Leadership Summit is a great way to support teacher leaders and building leadership teams through professional learning, collaboration, and networking. The Summit is free and takes place on June 11, 2025, in Columbus. This year’s theme is “Spark Innovation: Ignite Change.”

The Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children is a set of state laws in all 50 states that lowers barriers to education and eases the transition of military-connected students. MIC3Training.net offers access to on-demand training on the compact. Live Compact 101 webinar trainings are available every month online and are free.
