Being multilingual enhances children’s success in both school and work. The American Academy of Pediatrics advocates for language learning, noting that kids can learn multiple languages simultaneously without confusion or delays in language development. In fact, multilingual children often experience improved problem-solving and social connections.
Helping all students fully develop their literacy and skills in language arts promotes career readiness and more. The Department offers guidelines for schools and districts to establish programs, such as the Ohio Seal of Biliteracy to recognize individual student achievement in English and other languages. Read on for resources to connect English learner students to school and community activities.

Global Youth Service Day | Ohio Commission on Service and Volunteerism
ServeOhio is pleased to announce the availability of grants to support community service projects organized for Global Youth Service Day taking place from April 25 - 27, 2025. Projects (or series of projects) for this day of service can occur April 1 through April 30, 2025. Grant awards will range between $250 to $1,500.

Projects may span multiple days throughout the project window. Projects should be collaborative in nature, involve a broad spectrum of community participants, and benefit the larger community. Funds may be used for supplies, materials and volunteer support.
Who is eligible to apply?
Non-profit and public organizations in Ohio including, but not limited to, volunteer centers, faith-based organizations, school districts, community colleges, universities, and local governments are eligible to apply. NEW audio files and scripts are available to accompany the translated test directions for online administrations of the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) and Alternate Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (Alt-OELPA). These resources are verbatim translations of the general test directions spoken by the test administrator found in the OELPA Test Administration Manual and the Alt-OELPA Test Administration Manual. Test administrators may read the translated scripts aloud or play the translated audio files to help students understand the test directions.
Districts and schools utilizing the translations should download and use the files on the portal as there have been minor improvements since last year. When clicking a language on the test portal, the audio files and script will download together in a zip file. In addition to the translations on the test portal, districts and schools may translate the general test directions into languages needed for their student populations. Please contact the Office of Assessment with questions at (614) 466-1317 or email statetests@education.ohio.gov.
