Invitation to join the Ohio Alt-OELPA Community of Practice
The Department convenes a group of educators to provide feedback about the Alternative Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (Alt-OELPA) for multilingual English learners with the most significant cognitive disabilities. Educators who work with English learners identified as eligible for the state’s alternative assessments can contact Katelynn Crow (katelynn.crow@education.ohio.gov) for more information about joining the Alt-OELPA Community of Practice.
EMIS Update
In 2024, Section 2.2 of the Educational Management Information System (EMIS) renamed the English learner record “Student Home Language” to “Student Language Other than English” and added languages. This change aims to gather more comprehensive information about the language backgrounds of English learners. According to federal and state law, students identified as English learners are individuals whose language development in standardized English is impacted by communication in other languages. For more information, contact Lau@education.ohio.gov.
Biliteracy is fun!
Developing language proficiency in more than one language benefits individuals of all ages, especially English learners. Engaging with storybooks in both English and other languages is a great way to support this development. Access the Additional Languages section of Ohio’s Reading Tips for Families website for free, regularly updated resources in multiple languages.
