As world language learners return to the classroom in the coming weeks, educators can find many helpful resources from the Ohio Department of Education to support high-quality instruction, assessment and learning.
Learning Standards
Educators can choose from a variety of configurations of the standards to best fit their learning context and students. Ohio's 2020 World Languages and Cultures Learning Standards:
- are aligned to the ACTFL proficiency levels, from Novice Low - Advanced Low.
- include strands for communication, culture and literacy.
- include progress indicators to show what proficiency looks like in various classroom or real-world contexts for spoken languages, classical languages
and American Sign Language.
Educators can view the standards in multiple versions:
- Novice for grades K-6
- Novice for grades 7-12
- Novice High-Intermediate Mid
- Intermediate Mid-Advanced Low
- Grid of all standards for Novice Low- Advanced Low
Model Curriculum
Ohio's Model Curriculum for World Languages and Cultures contains multiple resources to support high-quality instruction, assessment and learning:
- Themes, topics and essential questions that are vertically aligned for Novice-Advanced learners.
- Extensive planning, instruction and assessment tools, such as backward design templates; performance and proficiency rubrics; and strategies for all modes of intercultural communication.
- Authentic cultural materials organized by language and topic.
- Career Connections strategies and sample lessons.
OTES 2.0 Resources
World language teachers can visit the OTES 2.0 for World Languages and Cultures page to find support for gathering High-Quality Student Data (HQSD) for the purpose of OTES 2.0. This includes an FAQ page for world languages, as well as ways to use assessments, projects or portfolios to gather HQSD.
Virtual Meetups Materials and Recordings
Materials and recordings from all world language virtual meetups from 2020-2022 are located in the World Language Digital Learning Center. Teachers can find specific sessions for dozens of topics led by Ohio world language teachers on planning, instruction, assessment and technology.
World Language Wednesdays and Teacher Cohorts
World Language Wednesday virtual meetups for 2022-2023 will begin soon. The meetup calendar is continually updated as new sessions are scheduled.
In collaboration with the Ohio Foreign Language Association, there will be two virtual teacher cohorts for Beginning Teachers and Project-Based Language Learning during the 2022-2023 school year.
