Standards for Mathematical Practice

Virtual Professional Development Series 

The Office of Learning and Instructional Strategies at the Ohio Department of Education in partnership with the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) are providing a free virtual professional development series on the the Standards for Mathematical Practice (MPs) beginning in November and running throughout the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year. This virtual series will feature a session on each of the eight MPs and highlight their applications across grade bands. 

The MPs describe the skills that mathematics educators should seek to develop in their students. The practices rest on important processes and proficiencies with longstanding importance in mathematics education. The MPs for each grade, together with Ohio’s Learning Standards for Mathematics, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a rigorous, coherent, useful and logical subject. The mathematical practices represent a picture of what it looks like for students to understand and do mathematics in the classroom and should be integrated into every mathematics lesson for all students.
