$2 million federal grant to boost mental-health resources in Appalachian Ohio school districts Columbus Dispatch Over the next five years, 110 mental-health specialists will be embedded into school districts across seven Appalachian Ohio counties, thanks to a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The Ohio Department of Education applied for the highly competitive grant — only five states received one — and decided to focus on eastern and southeastern school districts after watching COVID-19 exacerbate children's behavioral issues in the Appalachian region.
Several schools recognized as military-friendly with ‘Purple Star’ Dayton Daily News Several area schools are among Ohio schools that will get the Purple Star Award this year for serving military students and families. Brookville High School, Bellbrook Middle School, Tipp City’s LT Ball Intermediate School, Mad River Early Childhood Education Center and Trotwood-Madison’s Early Learning Center were all honored with the 2020 Ohio Department of Education award. The award, started in 2017, honors schools that work to accommodate military families and their students.

Akron Public Schools creates after-hours help desk to assist students with online learning Akron Beacon Journal Akron Public Schools is now offering students after-hours help with online learning. The district has created a help desk to connect students with tutors, as well as counselors and technology support. The center will be open 4-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. School board members had asked the administration to develop such a hotline, especially for students who may not always be able to log in during the day to their classes.
Bexley schools: Dan Good expected to be named interim superintendent Columbus Dispatch The Bexley City School District is saying farewell to Superintendent Kimberly Pietsch Miller and preparing to welcome former Columbus City Schools superintendent Dan Good as interim superintendent. The board is expected to officially name Good as the district’s interim leader at its Oct. 6 meeting. Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools announced Miller was hired as its superintendent following a Sept. 30 special meeting of its board.
Perrysburg Schools Foundation creating streaming service to air school events Toledo Blade Amid ongoing social distancing concerns and regulations, the Perrysburg Schools Foundation plans to connect community members through a digital streaming platform. Foundation officials announced Wednesday a partnership with Councilman Barry VanHoozen, also a local insurance agent, to create PSF TV, which will stream various programs and live events throughout the school year, including performing arts performances and ceremonies. The platform will also be used to spotlight students' and faculty members’ achievements.
Sherri Buford Westwood Elementary: Homegrown Heroes 2020 Cleveland Plain Dealer ... As the Westwood Elementary students logged on, (Sherri) Buford greeted them by name, complimenting one student’s necklace and another’s haircut. With her outgoing personality, Buford made online teaching look seamless. That’s because she already laid a foundation before the school year started, visiting each of her students' homes to introduce herself... Buford is one of Westwood’s best teachers who has exuded dedication throughout her 11-year teaching career. She’s (Cleveland Plain Dealer's) Homegrown Hero for September.
$50,000 gift from Arlene Holden to support need-based scholarships for Lakeland students Willoughby News-Herald Lake County philanthropist and advocate for higher education Arlene Holden has contributed $50,000 to The Arlene M. and Arthur S. Holden Endowed Scholarship Fund at Lakeland Community College through The Lakeland Foundation. According to the school, the fund provides need-based scholarships to Lakeland students who maintain a 2.8 grade-point average, who are United States citizens, and who demonstrate good moral character, integrity, leadership potential and prior or current involvement in extracurricular activities and/or family responsibilities.
Lorain Schools voters to consider 23.85-mill renewal levy Lorain Morning Journal Lorain City Schools leaders and supporters hope to get out the vote for a renewal levy on the Nov. 3 ballot. Lorain City School District voters will consider a five-year, 23.85-mill renewal levy that would raise about $9.92 million a year for district operations, according to figures from Treasurer Tia Kearney.
