Our Human Resources team recently connected in Columbus for its second annual HR retreat.
The event started a year ago as a way for staff to learn more about each other and strengthen relationships through teambuilding exercises. It also gives DYS leadership an opportunity to highlight successes and share new approaches for hiring, retention, and wellness to make our agency a better place for our staff to work, learn and grow.
“In my 25 years of state government, this is by far the best HR team I've worked with. I'm just excited for what the future holds for this DYS team," said Kelly East, Deputy Director of Human Resources

Staff across all facilities took part in educational and communal wellness events regarding health for African American men.
Central Office staff and paroled youth assisted with the Black Men's Wellness Day in Columbus that included a 5K run and walk. You can watch the event highlights by clicking here or on the image above.

At Indian River, youth underwent biometric screenings and received health guidance.
The lessons fueled their minds and they were able to eat a variety of healthy snacks.

At Circleville, youth participated in a mile walk and multitasked the trek with basketballs. And at Cuyahoga Hills, staff organized multiple walks ranging from a mile to a 5K.
The purpose of the wellness events were to highlight health disparities in the Black community. According to the CDC, young African Americans live with diseases more common at older ages and they are more likely to die at early ages from all causes. Thank you to all our facility, medical, and central office staff who helped organize and took part in these events across agency to highlight the importance of this day for our youth.

Has everyone enjoyed the start to the NFL season kicking off? So are our youth and staff.
Parole and Reentry teams tapped into that energy with DYS youth during a recent trip to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.
Thank you to Ella Banks-Fuggs, Tarence Brooks, Chris Crine, and Charlie Ford for giving these young men this experience.

Cooper was the nation's first African American warden and prison system director, according to the Ohio State Reformatory.
