CYBER

(U) Telegram Hit by Cyber-Attack, CEO Points to Hong Kong Protests, China

(U) Encrypted messaging service Telegram suffered a major cyber-attack that appeared to originate from china, the company’s CEO said on 13 June, linking it to the ongoing political unrest in Hong Kong. Many protesters in the city have used Telegram to evade electronic surveillance and coordinate their demonstrations against a controversial Beijing-backed plan that would allow extraditions from the semi-autonomous territory to the mainland. Telegram announced late on 12 June that it was suffering “a powerful” distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, which involves a hacker overwhelming a target’s servers by making a massive number of fake requests.

(U) Water Safety Urged as Weather Warms

(U) Water safety is being reminded as the search for a missing 15-year old Columbus teen last seen swimming in the Kokosing River in Knox County continues. According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, search efforts ended for the second day with no signs of the teen in the Honey Run Park area. As the weather warms, officials are urging people to be aware of the dangers at some rivers, creeks, and ponds. Some water levels in some rivers or creeks could look deceiving.
