S.R. 72 Bridge Rehab Project Gets Under Way

Overnight restrictions on I-71 this week for preliminary site work

Greene County (Monday, April 7, 2025) – A project to rehabilitate two structures over Interstate 71 in southern Greene County is set to begin, with working getting started on state Route 72 this month.

Contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation will be replacing the deck and painting the structural steel of the bridge on S.R. 72 that is located just north of the Clinton County line and carries traffic over I-71.

Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, April 14, and throughout the first phase of work, S.R. 72 will be closed. The closure is scheduled to be in effect through mid-September, approximately 150 days, and while it is closed, northbound S.R. 72 motorists will be detoured by way of I-71 North and S.R. 435 in Fayette County to I-71 South. Southbound S.R. 72 motorists will be rerouted via I-71 South and U.S. 68 in Clinton County to I-71 North.

In advance of construction starting on the bridge, crews will begin site preparations and installing falsework under the structure, requiring restrictions on I-71.

On Wednesday and Thursday, April 8 and 9, I-71 North and South will be reduced to one lane in each direction from 8 p.m. each night to 9 a.m. the following day. Intermittent, overnight lane restrictions will also be in effect as needed during the weeks of April 14 and April 21.

The project also includes rehabilitating the bridge on Orchard Grove Road over I-71; however, a date to start work on this structure has yet to be determined.

Miller Brothers Construction, Inc. was awarded a contract for $2.8 million to complete the project, and all work will be completed by late June 2026.
