Now Open: Put a Lid on It Helmet Application
The “Put a Lid On It!” Bike Helmet Application is open! The Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP) is currently accepting applications for its "Put a Lid on It!" Bike Helmet Safety Program. This initiative provides free bike helmets to pediatrician offices, county health departments, police and fire departments, schools, and various other organizations across Ohio. The program aims to increase helmet usage among children and prevent injuries by combining helmet distribution with educational materials on proper fitting and biking safety.
- Since 2011, 93,000+ helmets have been distributed.
- In 2023 alone, 10,000+ helmets reached 155 organizations in 52 counties.
- Only 10-20% of children in Ohio wear bike helmets.
- Helmets reduce head injury risk by 85% and severe brain injury by 88%.
Apply by February 28 to help keep Ohio kids safe while biking!

The Safe Routes to School Project (SRTS) Application is open! Safe Routes to School supports projects that improve safety and accessibility for students walking and biking to school, fostering healthier communities and more active transportation options.
