V2X Marks the Spot:
Ohio's Deployment Strategy Coming Soon

ped

V2X, the latest in connected vehicle technology, stands for Vehicle-to-Everything and allows vehicles to send and receive safety messages to each other or different parts of the environment like traffic lights, road signs, or even pedestrians' smart phones. V2X helps cars "see" and "hear" things that may be too far away or hidden from the driver, making driving smarter and safer by preventing crashes and improving traffic flow.

In August 2024, the U.S. DOT published Saving Lives with Connectivity: A Plan to Accelerate V2X Deployment, which established milestones and targets around infrastructure deployments, vehicles, spectrum, interoperability, and benefits and technical assistance. The U.S. DOT's plan involves collaboration between all levels of government and the private sector to expand digital infrastructure, V2X-capable vehicles, and certified technology.

As a complement to the U.S. DOT's plan, DriveOhio is producing Ohio's V2X Deployment Strategy to effectively use available funding and support both ODOT and local agencies in achieving these short, medium, and long-term goals. Ohio's strategy will primarily focus on infrastructure deployments and identifying safety-related use cases; however, it will also establish goals for automakers to produce technology-enabled vehicles, expand data collection, and demonstrate interoperability. Ohio's strategy is anticipated next month.

Workforce Development Equipment Funding Opportunity

Workforce

DriveOhio is implementing a workforce development training initiative. Public and private higher education, career technical, and K-12 institutions may have the opportunity to purchase an EV fast-charger to use for in-classroom training and hands-on experience. This initiative aims to support the future of electrification-focused workforce growth in the state of Ohio.

A minimum of 20% cost-sharing from non-federal sources is required, and equipment may not be installed for use by the public for vehicle charging. Interested institutions should complete the survey no later than February 7, 2025 to get involved.
