Mill Creek Expressway/Railroad Project Update

Lane shifts, contraflow lane to be implemented

Hamilton County (Friday, November 22, 2024) – With Phase 8 of the I-75 Mill Creek Expressway Project under way, contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation will implement traffic changes on I-75 with lane shifts and the implementation of a contraflow lane.

Phase 8 of the Mill Creek Expressway calls for the replacement of three railroad bridges located over Prosser Avenue, I-75, and S.R. 562, as well as minor realignment of I-75 lanes to accommodate a new railroad bridge pier location on I-75. Also included in the project are bridge repairs to the structure that carries traffic on the ramp from westbound S.R. 562 to I-75 South.

To begin work on the structure over I-75, crews will impart traffic changes and establish a contraflow lane by moving the left lane of southbound I-75 to the left lane of northbound I-75. The contraflow lane will extend from the Towne Street overpass through the S.R. 562/Norwood Lateral interchange. Although the exit to the Lateral will remain open, southbound motorists will not be able to exit onto S.R. 562 from the contraflow lane.

While all lanes on northbound I-75 have already been shifted to the right to accommodate this traffic change, crews will need to construct a crossover to move a single lane of southbound traffic into the contraflow lane.

Tonight and tomorrow, November 22 and 23, crews will be paving in the median, and a single-lane closure will be in effect on I-75 South between the southbound Paddock Road entrance ramp and the exit ramp to S.R. 562. The left lane will be closed each night from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.

The traffic switch will then take place over two nights, starting Monday, December 2, with a single-lane closure on I-75 South beginning at 8 p.m., followed by a double-lane closure at 11 p.m. and continuing until 6 a.m. for crews to shift traffic on the mainline.

The following night, December 3, a double-lane closure and intermittent, short-term periods of closure will be in effect beginning at 11 p.m. while crews complete the final lane shifts to open the contraflow lane to southbound traffic by early Wednesday, December 4.

On Wednesday and Thursday, December 4 and 5, lane closures will be in effect again on I-75 South for the installation of portable concrete barrier (PCB), with a double left-lane closure on Wednesday beginning at 11 p.m. and continuing until 6 a.m. Thursday, and single right-lane closure on Thursday, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday.

This traffic pattern and the contraflow lane will be in effect through May of 2026, and the entire project is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2027.

The I-75 Mill Creek Expressway is series of projects that will widen and resurface I-75 between the Western Hills Viaduct and S.R. 126, as well as complete interchange improvements at multiple locations. The Mill Creek Expressway projects have been split into 14 phases, some of which have been completed, and the phases have not been completed in order.
