Get Moving with Special Active Transportation Funding from ODOT!
We thought the word “funding” might get your attention! The Ohio Department of Transportation is kicking off a special funding opportunity. Beginning in October, ODOT is offering a special solicitation for a variety of pedestrian or bicycle related projects, with an emphasis on projects that can be completed in the short term. See below for details and a link to apply!
Who is Eligible?
Any political subdivision is eligible to apply, regardless of location inside or outside of an MPO.
What Types of Projects are Eligible?
- Non-infrastructures projects, such as:
- Education and promotion projects such as temporary demonstration projects
- Data collection
- Plans or studies like School Travel Plans or feasibility studies
- Infrastructure projects that can be built quickly (i.e., are fully in the right of way), like:
- Sidewalk replacement or trail resurfacing
- Pavement markings
- Median islands or raised crosswalks
- Traditional infrastructure projects of statewide significance, like:
How will Projects be Selected?
- Scoring is based on demonstrating:
- The project will improve statewide goals
- There is a need for funding
- The ability to successfully implement the project
- Priority will be given to:
- Non-infrastructure projects
- Infrastructure projects that can begin construction by June 30, 2026.
- Projects identified in a local plan
- Projects in areas where there is high demand and high need for active transportation.
- For traditional infrastructure projects, priority will be given to projects that improve the Level of Traffic Stress (LTS) of Ohio’s State and US Bike Route System.
Funding Details
- Funding is available to applicants in Fiscal Year 2025 and beyond.
- Applications can be submitted at any time and will be reviewed Quarterly on/around: January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1.
- Most of this funding is available at 100%, with no local match required. However, municipalities with over 100,000 people are required to provide a 20% match only for infrastructure projects.
- This special solicitation is primarily offering reimbursement funding. Opportunities for consultant assistance for planning or design are extremely limited through this application.

Announcements
- The Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) application is open until November 30. TAP funds support communities outside of MPOs and is available for pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure projects. New this year:
- TAP funds can be used for design. Limited to a maximum cost of $200,000 as an 80% TAP 20% local split.

- Active Transportation and Safe Routes to School planning assistance requests can be submitted by December 2nd, 2024.
- The Safe Routes to School Project Application will open in early January, with project applications due March 7th, 2025.
- The Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity, or RAISE Discretionary Grant program’s next application deadline is January 13, 2025. The RAISE program provides a unique opportunity to invest in road, rail, transit and port projects that achieve national objectives.
