Mill Creek Expressway - Phase 8 Bridge Project
Set To Begin This Month

Norwood Lateral Project Update

Hamilton County (Friday, September 6, 2024) – The next phase for the I-75 Mill Creek Expressway series of projects is set to begin, with construction getting under way this month.

Phase 8 of the Mill Creek Expressway calls for the replacement of three railroad bridges located over Prosser Avenue, I-75, and S.R. 562, as well as minor realignment of I-75 lanes to accommodate a new railroad bridge pier location on I-75.

Also included in the project are bridge repairs to the structure that carries traffic on the ramp from westbound S.R. 562 to I-75 South, and construction will get started during the weekend of September 13, when contractors will be welding a steel plate to the expansion joints and overlaying the approach slabs to provide for a smoother transition when traveling over the bridge.

In order to complete the work, a closure of the ramp will be necessary, and this, in turn, will require a closure of the Paddock Road entrance ramp to westbound S.R. 562. The closure will be in effect from 7 p.m. Friday, September 13, to 5 a.m. Monday, September 16, and the schedule to complete the bridge work on the ramp is being coordinated in tandem with the current closure of the Norwood Lateral in the westbound direction between I-71 and Paddock Road.

Although it was planned initially to reopen the Norwood Lateral by August 30, the ambitious timeframe was met with weather and construction-related issues, forcing the schedule into September. Along with unanticipated additional design and construction work needed to rectify structural steel issues on the Ross Avenue bridge, excessive heat last week delayed attempted concrete pours for the deck overlay on back-to-back nights.

Currently, contractors are finishing their work on the Ross Avenue bridge and, weather permitting, crews will complete paving operations on the Lateral next week. A specific day to reopen the westbound lanes has yet to be determined; however, it is anticipated that the Lateral will be reopened to traffic during the weekend of September 20.

The Great Lakes Construction Company was awarded a contract for approximately $21.4 million to complete the Norwood Lateral project, and while major construction will wrap up this month, the entire project is scheduled for completion in June 2025.

Under a separate contract, Great Lakes Construction will also undertake the Mill Creek Expressway - Phase 8 project, and this is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2027.

The I-75 Mill Creek Expressway is series of projects that will widen and resurface I-75 between the Western Hills Viaduct and S.R. 126, as well as complete interchange improvements at multiple locations. The Mill Creek Expressway projects have been split into 14 phases, some of which have been completed, and the phases have not been completed in order.
