U.S. 6 Charles Berry Bascule Bridge

LORAIN COUNTY (Tuesday, April 19, 2022) - All outlined work is subject to change.

U.S. Route 6 Charles Berry Bascule Bridge – The U.S. 6 Charles Berry Bascule Bridge over the Black River, between Washington Avenue and Arizona Avenue, is closed to vehicular traffic due to a mechanical failure. The bridge remains open to pedestrian traffic and marine traffic.

NEW IMPACTS

  • After reviewing the temporary repairs made to the north span lock supports, the two eastbound lanes will be open to vehicular traffic until the permanent replacement parts arrive.
  • The bridge will be monitored until the permanent work is completed.
  • Once the new parts arrive, it will take approximately 4-5 days to install the new parts and re-align the lock. Please note, the permanent repairs will require the bridge to re-close to vehicular traffic. A notice of the re-closure will be sent out at a later date.

CONITNUING IMPACTS

  • The locking mechanism, on the north span lock, was damaged from a mechanical failure and is not operable as of Tuesday, April 12 when the bridge was officially closed.
  • After assessing the damage, it was determined that the entire north center lock does not need to be replaced. The parts that do need replaced are available and the supplier has been contacted. It will take approximately 10 business days to receive them.

Estimated reopening date: First week of May 2022 – An official completion date has yet to be determined due to not yet having the parts for work to officially start on the permanent repairs.
