U.S. 6 Charles Berry Bascule Bridge Closure
LORAIN COUNTY (Monday, April 18, 2022)
The U.S. 6 Charles Berry Bascule Bridge over the Black River, between Washington Avenue and Arizona Avenue, is closed to vehicular traffic due to a mechanical failure. The bridge remains open to pedestrian traffic and marine traffic.
NEW IMPACTS
- The locking mechanism, on the north span lock, was damaged from a mechanical failure and is not operable as of Tuesday, April 12 when the bridge was officially closed.
- After assessing the damage, it was determined that the entire north center lock does not need to be replaced. The parts that do need replaced are available and the supplier has been contacted. It will take approximately 10 business days to receive them.
- It will take several additional days to install the new parts and re-align the lock. However, crews are continuing to make some temporary repairs in the meantime.
Estimated reopening date: First week of May 2022 – An official completion date has yet to be determined due to not yet having the parts for work to officially start on the permanent repairs.
