South Side Mega Fix:
Greenlawn Ave. Ramp Meter

Ramp meters at entrance to highway

Starting Thursday, June 3, the ramp meter on the entrance ramp from Greenlawn Ave. to I-71 north will be re-activated. While the ramp meter has not been operational during construction of the South Side Mega Fix project, its return to service signals the project is nearing the finish line.

Beginning next week, Greenlawn Ave. drivers entering I-71 north should pay extra attention. Vehicles will be required to stop when the light is red, and proceed to enter only after the light turns green. When the light turns green, only one vehicle may enter.

Ramp meters, like the one pictured above, detect speed and occupancy of mainline lanes, allowing cars to enter the highway from the ramp at the appropriate times to promote the most efficient flow of interstate traffic. Though sometimes unpopular with drivers, ramp metering has actually proven to reduce travel time and crashes.
