New Signalization Set for Operation on Butler-747
Butler County (Tuesday, April 7, 2020) – Changes will soon be coming to select signals on the state Route 747 corridor in Butler County as part of an intersection improvement project to enhance safety and traffic flow.
Since January, crews have been working at the intersections from Devitt Drive to Tylersville Road to upgrade the signals and install flashing yellow arrow heads for the left-turn lanes on S.R. 747. Although the technology is not new, this is the first ODOT corridor statewide to receive this treatment.
The flashing yellow arrows replace the traditional green ball for left-turn movements, giving drivers more opportunities to turn left and keep traffic moving at different times of the day. By providing more turning opportunities, the flashing yellow arrow has been proven to reduce left-turn crashes and minimize travel delays.
The yellow arrow operates by flashing to indicate that a motorist may turn left only when there is no oncoming traffic and crosswalks are clear of pedestrians and bicyclists. When the yellow arrow is solid, or not flashing, motorists should prepare to stop and not proceed into the intersection to turn left. Green and red arrows function as expected, indicating that motorists may either proceed through the intersection or stop at the light, respectively.
The signal changes on S.R. 747 are anticipated to be rolled out during the evening hours beginning Tuesday, April 14, beginning at the Tylersville Road intersection and continuing south each night throughout the week.
Capital Electric Line Builders was awarded a contract for approximately $157,000 to complete the upgrade, and all work is scheduled for completion by the end of the April.
Motorists are reminded to use additional caution at the intersections, and for additional information and to view Flashing Yellow Arrow Light videos, visit ODOT’s web site dedicated to the project by way of this link.
