ODOT DISTRICT 1, SHELLY COMPANY RECOGNIZED FOR STATE ROUTE 65 PROJECT

Rehabilitation project earns honorable mention at conference

LIMA, Ohio (March 7, 2019) – For the third year in a row, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 1 has been recognized at the annual Conaway Conference for its efforts to collaborate and communicate with contractors on construction projects.

Don Conaway Partnering Awards are presented at an annual statewide conference held jointly by ODOT and the Ohio Contractors Association (OCA) each winter. The awards are meant to recognize achievements in partnering, a standard practice on ODOT construction projects that promotes open communication and understanding between the state and contractors. The philosophy also promotes conflict resolution at the project level.

This year, ODOT District 1 and the Shelly Company of Findlay received an honorable mention for its partnering on a rehabilitation project completed last year in the city of Lima. The $4 million project added sidewalks, curbs and new storm sewer components to state Route 65 (West Street) in northern Lima. Over four miles of state Route 65 and state Route 81 in the city were resurfaced during the project, as well.

Personnel from ODOT and the Shelly Company met multiple times before, during and after the project to facilitate the partnering process. In addition to their partnering meetings, ODOT and the Shelly Company communicated with local business owners, residents and major stakeholders, including the city of Lima, throughout the project.

“Having won partnering awards at the past two conferences and gotten an honorable mention this year, our district consistently proves our dedication to collaborating with contractors. Honest communication and teamwork have helped us work smarter and more efficiently with the resources we have,” said Kirk Slusher, deputy director of ODOT District 1.

ODOT District 1 won an award at the Conaway Conference last year for partnering with Miller Brothers Construction on the removal of four bridge structures on U.S. 23 near Carey in Wyandot County, and in 2016 for partnering with Degen Excavating for a reconstruction project along Main Street in Cairo in Allen County.
