Parent and Youth Ambassadors Now Offering Support Across the State
(Four of Ohio's PYAs: front row, Stephanie Wade and Catherine Lachman; back row, Marcy Jett and Sheena Pasker)
Ohio's 12 Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) agencies have a long-standing presence in their service delivery areas, offering support specific to child care. Now those CCR&Rs are building their continuum of support for families with the addition of Parent and Youth Ambassadors.
Parent and Youth Ambassadors (PYAs) are a unique peer support available for families with no specific eligibility requirements when requesting assistance. Examples of common requests for support range from navigating special education, resources for unhoused families, assistance with childcare, and assistance paying utilities.
PYAs were developed based on feedback received from families during the Department of Children and Youth (DCY)-led Listening Sessions. the PYAs have lived-experience in social services systems and will answer questions and help individuals and families quickly access the help they need.
PYAs are members of their local community or service delivery area and focus on building and growing their knowledge of local resources and DCY programs and services. This allows them to make connections in communities to best serve families. Through their partnership with DCY, PYAs are in an ideal position to serve as a “mouthpiece” for families, sharing issues or gaps in service within their service delivery area. Identifying needs or gaps may stem from interactions with families working through requests for support, hosting listening sessions, or even hosting Parent Cafes and/or parent support groups.
Anyone can make a request for support for themselves or on behalf of a family. To reach a DCY Parent and Youth Ambassador, call the DCY Family Customer Support Call Center (844) 234-KIDS (5437) or email Ambassadors@childrenandyouth.ohio.gov.
