MARCS coverage to expand in Lorain County

The finalization of an agreement between DAS and Lorain County means the Multi-Agency Radio Communication System (MARCS) will be expanding its coverage in the county.

The MARCS system is the wireless, digital communications network that connects Ohio first responders from multiple jurisdictions during emergencies. The MARCS Program Office within the DAS Office of Information Technology manages the MARCS system statewide.

The agreement involves adding communications equipment to an existing Lorain County tower at the 9-1-1 center. This will allow for the addition of about 75 new radios that will be used by the Avon and North Ridgeville Police Departments.

“This is a great move forward that will improve coverage in the eastern side of Lorain County, better supporting the safety of first responders and the Ohioans they protect,” said Dick Miller, MARCS Field Operations Manager.

DAS Office of Information Technology employees receive recognition

Two employees of the DAS Office of Information Technology (OIT) – Network Services Manager Rory Barrett and Network Infrastructure Specialist Terry Fouts – were recently recognized for their hard work and efforts to advance technology for the benefit of the State of Ohio and ultimately its citizens.

The National Association of State Technology Directors (NASTD) announced that Barrett is now the vice president of the Midwestern region (Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin) and will assist the regional president in shaping the future of the Midwestern NASTD Conferences and provide suggestions for the next national convention.

Fouts is the recipient of the 2021 Ohio Library Council Citizen of the Year Award. For over 26 years, Terry has served the citizens of Ohio and the State Libraries through his work with DAS OIT.

In Terry’s early days, he was installing T1 lines for the first Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN). The technology has matured since that time, but Terry’s unwavering dedication to OPLIN as well as the many agencies, boards, and commissions that utilize DAS OIT services has not changed.
