Columbus Recreation and Parks Dedicates Renovated Therapeutic Recreation Facility to Honor the Legacy of Ben and Kathy Espy
COLUMBUS - Columbus Recreation and Parks Department will dedicate the newly renovated Espy Adaptive Sports Complex—formerly the Franklin Park Adventure Center—on Wednesday, Sept. 3. The $1.03 million project improves accessibility and inclusion for residents of all abilities.
The complex is being renamed to honor Ben and Kathy Espy, lifelong champions for community and social justice. Following the dedication, media and guests are invited to take a self-guided tour and view adaptive sports demonstrations.
Who:
- Mayor Andrew J. Ginther
- Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin
- Council Member Otto Beatty
- Director Bernita A. Reese, M.S., CPRP – Columbus Recreation and Parks Department
- Elizabeth Espy and Amy Espy-Smith
When: Wednesday, Sept. 3, 11 a.m.
Where: Espy Adaptive Sports Complex, 1755 E. Broad St., 43203
Why: The Espy Complex is the hub for adaptive sports and recreation in central Ohio, serving residents with disabilities through the department’s Therapeutic Recreation program. The renovations go beyond ADA compliance, reflecting a commitment to respect, dignity and inclusion for all participants. Several restroom stalls have been sized beyond ADA standards to ensure access by motorized mobility devices.
About The Project
Opened in 1978, the complex required major updates to reflect the department’s commitment to accessibility, inclusion and community. Renovations include redesigned restrooms with universal changing tables and roll-in showers, safety enhancements for adaptive sports, new flooring, expanded storage, and improved gathering spaces for families and caregivers.
