City of Columbus to Hold Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the New Flatwood Park
COLUMBUS - Columbus Recreation and Parks Department invites community members and media to celebrate the opening of the brand-new Flatwood Park at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, June 10, at 11:30 a.m.
This park, located at 6016 Alkire Road in Galloway, includes a 7,900-square-foot playground for children of all ages, an open-air shelter, a paved looped .4-mile walking path, seasonal ADA-accessible portable restroom, green spaces, benches, 68 new trees and a parking lot. This park also offers residents a direct connection to the 12-mile Camp Chase Trail and three pedestrian connectors to Georgesville Road, Tampico Drive and Glennon Drive.
“After listening to what the Westland community wanted, we are thrilled to be able to open this brand-new park,” said Mayor Andrew J. Ginther. “This is a great opportunity for community members to gather and enjoy being outdoors while also creating more trail access for residents with the connection to the Camp Chase Trail.”
The park is located within the Big Darby Tier One Environmental Preservation area and is considered a key preservation site for the watershed on the boundary of Columbus and the Big Darby. Flatwood Park aims to provide recreational amenities to the community and protect the inherent beauty of the existing bluestem meadow, forested areas and wetlands. The park was designed to minimize disturbance to these natural features, reduce the amount of impervious surfaces and treat all stormwater runoff.
“Flatwood Park will be a tremendous benefit to this community, supporting recreation and conservation,” said Bernita A. Reese, M.S., CPRP, director of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. “Conservation is an important part of our department’s vision, and being able to preserve such a unique site with a bluestem meadow, wetlands and forested areas means we will be able to protect this space for years to come.”
