Columbus Recreation and Parks Promotes Water Safety Ahead of Pool Season
COLUMBUS -
May is National Water Safety Month, and with summer around the corner, Columbus Recreation and Parks Department is reminding residents to prioritize safety while preparing for a fun season in the water.
Whether you’re swimming at one of the City’s eight outdoor pools or enjoying time near water with family and friends, taking steps to stay safe can help prevent accidents and ensure everyone enjoys the season.
“Water is one of the best parts of summer—but safety always comes first,” said Bernita A. Reese, M.S., CPRP, director of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. “We want everyone to feel confident and safe while enjoying our pools and waterways. Learning to swim, staying alert and practicing smart safety habits are key to a summer full of fun and connection.”
Water Safety Tips
Residents are encouraged to follow these important safety tips:
- Always supervise children closely around water—even when lifeguards are present.
- Designate a “water watcher” during group gatherings.
- Swim in designated areas with a buddy; never swim alone.
- Use Coast Guard-approved life jackets for young or inexperienced swimmers.
- Avoid relying on inflatable toys for flotation or supervision.
- Secure home pools with proper barriers, and never leave children unattended—even for a few minutes.
- Learn to swim, and be prepared. Enroll in swim lessons and CPR courses to be ready in case of emergencies.
Swim Lessons for All Ages
The department offers swim lessons for residents of all ages at just $15 per session, with scholarships available to ensure everyone has access. Lessons are a great way to build skills, confidence and lifelong safety habits in the water.
