Join Columbus Recreation and Parks and Columbus Metropolitan Library for a special event unveiling the North Star Project, an exciting new initiative honoring the historical significance of the Alum Creek Trail. This project will transform the trail into an interactive space, celebrating its role in the journey to freedom for many African Americans.
Join us on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Shepard Branch, 850 N. Nelson Road, 43219. During Shepard History Day, you will get a first look at plans for a new park adjacent to the Shepard Branch, featuring educational installations, a playground and a reflective space designed to make history engaging for all ages. Join the conversation, and contribute your ideas for the playground.
New educational elements will be unveiled each Black History Month for a period of time, creating a dynamic space for learning and recreation along the Alum Creek Trail.

Every Feb. 2, we celebrate World Wetlands Day as a reminder of the vital role wetlands play. These sensitive habitats, found at the intersection of land and water, are teeming with life, from birds and frogs to salamanders and turtles. Often referred to as the "kidneys of the Earth," wetlands filter pollutants from stormwater, reducing contaminants in our waterways and mitigating flood risks.
Despite their immense value to both nature and people, wetlands are increasingly threatened by urban development and expansion. World Wetlands Day encourages us to recognize and preserve these vital areas. When you’re out enjoying nature, please do your part by picking up any litter you encounter, and always dispose of your trash properly.
For a closer look at our local wetlands, check out one of the many beautiful wetland conservation areas in Columbus’ nature preserves; Kiwanis Riverway, Hoover Meadows and Mud Hen Marsh nature preserves are great spots to visit!

Summer is just around the corner, and Columbus Recreation and Parks Department's summer camp registration opens on Tuesday, Feb. 25! Give your child a season filled with adventure, creativity and fun by signing up for one of our exciting camps.
Choose from a variety of options, including sports camps, arts camps, Therapeutic Recreation camps and more. Camps run from June 9 to Aug. 15, with dates varying by camp. Be sure to review camp descriptions, schedules and fee details in advance so you’re ready to register.
Registration for Columbus residents opens at noon, and the general public can register beginning at 7 p.m. Register online or visit your local community center. Friendly reminder that Outdoor Recreation camp registration starts on Feb. 20!

 Volunteer This Spring: Help at the Boxing Showcase, Golf Courses and More
With warm weather on the horizon, we’re gearing up for another exciting volunteer season! Whether you love sports, enjoy the outdoors or want to make a difference in your community, we have the perfect opportunity for you.
If boxing is your passion, lend a hand at the Boxing Showcase Feb. 14-15 at Barack Community Center, 580 E. Woodrow Ave., 43207. Volunteers are needed for set-up and tear-down—sign up for one or both shifts: Feb. 14 from 3-6 p.m. and Feb. 15 from 8-10 p.m.
Prefer golf? Spend your summer helping out at our six golf courses! Volunteers assist with tasks like cleaning golf carts, starting groups, picking up driving range balls and course beautification. Plus, if you commit to 10 hours per week, you’ll receive free golf at any of our courses!
For those passionate about inclusion, our Therapeutic Recreation program is looking for volunteers to support adaptive aquatics swimming lessons, wheelchair rugby and basketball practices, and boccia practices. Sign up for a single session or multiple dates, and help make recreation accessible for all.
