Did you know that nearly 1 million pounds of food waste is sent to the Franklin County landfill every single day—that's the weight of 77 elephants added to the landfill daily! This waste not only takes up valuable space but also releases harmful methane gas as it decomposes.
You can help make a difference by composting your food scraps instead of throwing them away. Composting keeps organic waste out of the landfill and turns it into nutrient-rich soil that benefits the environment.
To make it easy for you, the City offers a free food scrap composting program for residents! Simply collect your food scraps, and drop them off at any of these convenient department locations, which are located outside near the dumpsters:
-
Bill McDonald Athletic Complex, 4990 Olentangy River Road, 43214
-
Dodge Community Center, 667 Sullivant Ave., 43215
-
Scioto Southland Community Center, 3901 Parsons Ave., 43207
-
Beatty Community Center, 247 N. Ohio Ave., 43203
-
Howard Community Center, 2505 Cassady Ave., 43219
-
Linden Community Center, 1350 Briarwood Ave., 43211
-
Carriage Place Community Center, 4900 Sawmill Road, 43235
By participating, you’re not just reducing waste—you’re helping to protect the environment and build a sustainable future for our community. Let’s work together to make Columbus greener!

The Adopt a Center program was possible thanks to the generosity of our incredible sponsors:
Thanks to their generous support, we were able to provide meals, hygiene kits, winter coats, clothing and holiday toys to families across our 28 community centers in Columbus. These gifts are a reflection of the love and care that our sponsors and community partners have for you and your family.
It’s our privilege to be part of a community that lifts one another up. Thank you for letting us be a part of your holidays!
