October
marks National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an issue impacting women and
families every day across our country as well as here in our local community.
The abuse is a pattern of physically and emotionally violent and coercive
behaviors that one person uses to exercise power and control over another.
Intimate partner violence (IPV) happens when the abuse is used to gain power
over an intimate partner. Columbus Police personnel respond to domestic
violence calls more than 17,000 times a year, leading to the crime resulting in
the most arrests. In Ohio, from June
2016-June 2017, there were 115 fatalities in 84 domestic violence cases. Today
and every day, we stand with survivors of domestic and intimate partner
violence, as well as sexual assault. Believing women is the first step toward
change on an individual and societal level.

Along with partners Action for Children and The Women’s Fund of Central
Ohio, the Columbus Women’s Commission co-hosted a screening premiere of the
documentary No Small Matter. The
documentary outlines the importance of quality childcare and early childhood
education, as 85% of brain development occurs by age five and these first years
in life have an enormous impact on a child’s ability to thrive. Commissioner
Gina Ginn, Executive Director of Columbus Early Learning Centers, participated
on a panel discussion after the film viewing.
