 New Supportive Care Rule
BWC recently introduced Supportive Care Rule OAC 4123-6-31.1 to improve medical management for workers requiring ongoing care for workplace injuries.
Supportive care applies to claims where the injured worker has reached maximum recovery but needs treatment to maintain benefits or address exacerbations.
Providers must perform a comprehensive history and physical exam that includes:
- Assessment of current functioning using validated tools.
- Review of prior treatment, responses, and results of treatment withdrawal.
- A treatment plan detailing:
- Interventions requested, with frequency and duration.
- Lifestyle modifications, if applicable.
- A home exercise program, if applicable.
- Specific goals for treatment.
Managed care organizations must consider prior Ohio Industrial Commission decisions for similar treatment requests. Denials must include documentation showing how the worker’s circumstances differ from those considered in previous approvals.
Requests meeting this rule's criteria should be approved, even if the requested treatment exceeds the Official Disability Guidelines by MCG.
Updates: 90-day prescriptions and mail-order options
We’ve expanded access to 90-day prescription supplies to all state-fund workers’ compensation claims, improving care and medication adherence.
New mail-order pharmacy options now include:
-
Costco Mail Order: 1-800-607-6861
-
Post-Prescription Services: 1-800-552-6694
These new mail-order options provide flexible and reliable solutions to ensure Ohio’s injured workers receive their medications promptly and efficiently.
To submit a bill at the point-of-service, the pharmacy must be in network and transmit the following billing information:
- BIN: 610602
- PCN: NVT
- Group: OBWC
- Member ID: BWC claim number (including hyphen, if applicable)
For questions, contact BWC's Pharmacy team at 1-877-543-6446 or email Pharmacy.benefits@bwc.ohio.gov.
