Library Question of the Month
A question received by the library over the past month with our response.
Question:
What are the safety requirements for changing dies/die setting on a mechanical power press?
Answer:
Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) Rule 4123:1-5-10 - Mechanical power presses lists requirements for mechanical power presses: Rule 4123:1-5-10 - Ohio Administrative Code | Ohio Laws Section (E) Design, construction, setting, and feeding of dies, especially subsections (5), (6), (7), and (8), give instructions on changing dies. OSHA echoes these requirements in its 1910.217 mechanical power presses standard. We recommend looking at ANSI safety standard B11.1-2009 (R2020) Safety Requirements for Mechanical Power Presses. Section 9.2: Die set-up and Annex I provide information and a sample typical die changing procedure.
If you need help understanding die setting/changing dies on mechanical power presses, contact BWC’s Division of Safety and Hygiene. Consultation services are no cost for those with a BWC policy. Find out more on our website.
If you have question related to occupational safety and health, email the library at library@bwc.state.oh.us.

Workplace Injury Data Deadlines
Private employers with 11 or more employees are required to complete, certify, and prominently post the OSHA Form 300A (Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses) no later than Feb. 1. The Summary must remain posted until April 30. An exception is made for certain low-hazard industries, who are exempt from OSHA Recordkeeping requirements. See the Recordkeeping - Overview | Occupational Safety and Health Administration (osha.gov) for more details.
Employers required to report injury data to OSHA for calendar year 2022 must submit the Form 300A electronically by March 2, 2023, at https://www.osha.gov/injuryreporting/ita/. The content varies with the size of the employer. Anyone needing assistance untangling and understanding these requirements can contact Ohio's OSHA On-Site Consultation Program at 800-282-1425.
