BWC Library Question of the Month Our facility just tested above the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) for lead (fifty micrograms per cubic meter of air (50 ug/m3) averaged over an 8-hour period [see OSHA 1910.1025(c)). Are employees required to shower before leaving the facility? And are there any special requirements for employee lunchrooms?
Answer: According to OSHA’s Toxic and Hazardous Substances standard for Lead, 1910.1025:
"1910.1025(i)(3)(i) The employer shall assure that employees who work in areas where their airborne exposure to lead is above the PEL, without regard to the use of respirators, shower at the end of the work shift." So, yes, if employees work in an area that exceeds the PEL for lead, they must take a shower before leaving work. Also, OSHA states the following: "1910.1025(i)(3)(iii) The employer shall assure that employees who are required to shower pursuant to paragraph (i)(3)(i) do not leave the workplace wearing any clothing or equipment worn during the work shift."
OSHA covers lunchrooms in workplaces where the airborne exposure to lead is above the PEL in 1910.1025(i)(4) Lunchrooms
It might be helpful to look at OSHA's safety and health topics page for lead: Lead - Overview | Occupational Safety and Health Administration (osha.gov) and NIOSH’s lead info page: Lead: Workplace Lead Publications | NIOSH | CDC
