Public Employee Risk Reduction Program (PERRP) Frequently Cited Standards A dataset of PERRP Frequently Cited Standards is now available on the DataOhio portal. BWC Library Question of the Month A question received by the library over the past month with our response.
Question: What does OSHA or ANSI say about revoking a forklift operator’s license who has had an accident?
Answer: OSHA and ANSI do not say that an employer shall revoke a forklift operator’s license after a forklift related accident. According to both OSHA 1910.178 and ANSI B56.1, if an employee gets into an accident with a forklift, you must retrain and reevaluate them. The following links have complete information on training and evaluation requirements, including situational or industry exceptions.
According to OSHA’s 1910.178: Powered industrial trucks standard:
“1910.178(l)(4)(ii) Refresher training in relevant topics shall be provided to the operator when:
1910.178(l)(4)(ii)(B) The operator has been involved in an accident or near-miss incident;”
And according to ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 – 2020, Safety Standard for Low Lift and High Lift Trucks EFFECTIVE 3/27/22, under section 4.19.5 Testing, Retraining, and Enforcement: “(b) Operators shall be retrained when new equipment is introduced, existing equipment is modified, operating conditions are changed, or an operator’s performance is unsatisfactory.”
If you need help determining what forklift training your employees need, including retraining, contact BWC Safety Consultants. Consultation services are free for those with a BWC policy. Find out more on our website.
If you have questions about one of the standards above, a question about forklift operation requirements, or any questions related to occupational safety and health, email library@bwc.state.oh.us.
