BWC Library Question of the Month A question received by the library over the past month with our response.
Question: What are the egress requirements concerning emergency exit doors?
Answer: Emergency exit doors must conform to requirements found in the Ohio Fire Code, OSHA, and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
Here are some takeaways from each. Please note: There may be exceptions for the requirements listed under each set of rules/standards, and you should consult the entire standard (we have hyperlinked to each below). Occupancy and other special circumstances may dictate whether specifics of the code apply to your situation. If you need help determining what your situation calls for, please reach out to our BWC Safety Consultants. Consultation services are free for those with a BWC policy, and you can find out more on our website.
OSHA 1910.36 - Exit Routes and Emergency Planning: “1910.37(b)(3) Each exit route door must be free of decorations or signs that obscure the visibility of the exit route door.”
Ohio Fire Code 1307:7-7-10: “(b) [BE] 1010.1.2 Door swing. Egress doors shall be of the pivoted or side-hinged swinging type.”
NFPA 101 – Life Safety Code: “7.2.1.5.1 Door leaves shall be arranged to be opened readily from the egress side whenever the building is occupied.”
If you have questions about one of the standards above, a question about fire codes/egress requirements, or any questions related to occupational safety and health, Ask a librarian or send an email to library@bwc.state.oh.us.
