Attn Medical Billers! CMS-1500 electronic submission mandate effective August 1

Deadline approaching: Providers must begin electronic billing to be paid for services

If you provide medical billing services to health care providers, it’s important you’re aware that effective August 1, 2025, the Board will require providers (and their billers) – regardless of office size or patient population – to submit the CMS-1500 universal billing form and medical report electronically using a Board-approved electronic submission partner.  (Note – it must be through one of these submission partners as not all eBilling vendors are Board approved.)

After August 1, 2025, the Board will not act on, or enforce payment of, paper CMS-1500 forms and workers’ compensation payers can deny them, which means the submitting provider will not be paid. To ensure uninterrupted payment for services, the Board urges all providers to transition to electronic submission now. Providers will benefit from increased accuracy, efficiency, and faster payment.

Please ensure the providers you assist with billing are aware of this requirement and of the August 1, 2025 deadline so that they can transition to electronic submission as soon as possible. Step-by-step instructions can be found at this fact sheet.
