IMPORTANT REMINDER: The Board will require health care providers to submit the CMS-1500 universal billing form electronically beginning August 1, 2025, which must be done using a Board-approved electronic submission partner. But you don’t have to wait! Providers can move to electronic submission sooner to take advantage of key benefits.
Several electronic submission partners will accept paper CMS-1500 forms and convert to electronic on your behalf. If you choose to work with a submission provider that converts paper bills to electronic, complying with the mandate may be as simple as changing the address that you currently mail paper bills to.
If you are not currently working with an electronic submission partner, this fact sheet will guide you through the process step-by-step.
As was announced in a notification dated August 1, 2024, the Board will not act on or enforce payment of a paper CMS-1500 form submitted on or after August 1, 2025. Forms that are submitted prior to August 1, 2025, will continue to be processed, but providers are encouraged to transition to electronic submission now.
This new requirement will allow for faster payments, greater accuracy and efficiency, and will improve injured workers’ access to timely, quality medical care.
Please note: when you begin working with an electronic submission partner, you will no longer send the CMS-1500 form to the Board. The electronic submission partner must submit it on your behalf to the payer and the Board.
