Level three PAR review backlog reduced to zero!

Level three PAR review backlog reduced to zero!

Since launching the first, limited release of OnBoard in May 2022, the Board has reduced the backlog of level three prior authorization request (PAR) reviews from over 8,000 down to zero!

Over the past year and a half, the Board has been steadily working to reduce the level three PAR review backlog – using data to identify problem areas, implementing new processes, and adjusting staff resources.

Thanks to this effort, every level three PAR review is now handled within two to three weeks. Specifically, 90 to 95 percent of medication, behavioral health, and durable medical equipment (DME) PARs are resolved in one day or less, with the remaining 5 to 10 percent resolved within two to three days; special services PARs are resolved within about a week; and other variance and confirmation PARs are resolved within two to three weeks. The Board continues to reduce these turn-around times each week, resulting in more efficient and effective delivery of benefits to injured workers.

OnBoard enhancements

Since the launch of OnBoard, the Board has made over 66 enhancements to the system, including allowing grant without prejudice at Level 1 review, improved email subject lines, updated information fields, the ability for payers to export dashboard data from most dashboards, and the ability for providers to enter frequency and duration of physical modalities. The Board will continue to make further improvements over time, largely based on user feedback.

One such enhancement is coming soon: provider delegate submission/escalation. This enhancement will allow for a health care provider’s delegate to submit and escalate PARs on the provider’s behalf, rather than requiring the provider to do this themselves. The Board will be announcing the availability of this, and other future enhancements, via WCB Notifications – sign up today if you haven’t already!
