Dear Neighbors,

Welcome to the June edition of Around Town and the beginning of another exciting summer in the Town of Wappinger!

As the school year comes to a close and families prepare for vacations, barbecues, and time outdoors, I am proud to say that our Town is entering the summer season with tremendous momentum. Last month, I had the privilege of delivering my third annual State of the Town Address, where we reflected on the progress we have made together and outlined an ambitious vision for Wappinger's future. Thank you to everyone who attended, watched online, or took the time to learn more about the many accomplishments and initiatives underway across our community. The message was simple: Wappinger is moving forward, and the best is yet to come.

This month, I am pleased to report that our Highway Department has successfully completed this year's roadway paving program, improving 20 roads across the Town and continuing our commitment to investing in critical infrastructure. Our dedicated workforce continues to deliver results every day, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are being put to work where they matter most.

We are also actively working on several important updates to our Town Code and land use regulations designed to protect our natural resources, preserve neighborhood character, and prevent overdevelopment. These efforts build upon the Wappinger Protection Act and our ongoing commitment to responsible planning that safeguards our quality of life while encouraging smart and innovative investment.

Summer also means it's time to enjoy everything that makes Wappinger such a special place to call home. I invite everyone to join us for our expanded Summer Concert Series at Brexel-Schlathaus Park, beginning this month and continuing throughout the summer. From live music and community events to our new Farmers Market, recreational programs, and activities at Martz Field, Castle Point, and Carnwath Farms, there is truly something for everyone.

As always, thank you for your continued support, engagement, and pride in our community. My administration remains committed to being transparent, accessible, and focused on delivering results for residents. Together, we will continue building a stronger, safer, and more vibrant Wappinger for generations to come.

Join us this summer for our extended Summer Concert Series at this gorgeous band shell and newly constructed dance floor!

You can bring a chair, your boogie shoes, your dinner, or a blanket, just as long as you bring yourself(and hopefully a dozen or so of your closest friends)! Take advantage of these free concerts in the park Thursdays at 7:00 p.m., Schlathaus Park @ Myers Corners & All Angels Hill roads. Relax and unwind under the stars at these mid-week mini-vacations.

Something new and fresh is coming to Wappinger!! 🌾

Town Supervisor Joseph D. Cavaccini is proud to announce the launch of the Wappinger Farmers Market! Starting Monday, June 22 from 4-7 at Wappinger Town Hall, residents and visitors can get their weekly produce shopping done at the beginning of each week for 19 Mondays from a variety of local farms and agriculturally focused vendors.

We are still looking for vendors each week!

***A Message from the Town Supervisor Joseph D. Cavaccini Regarding Recent Vehicle Break-Ins***

The Town of Wappinger has recently seen at least two thefts from vehicles and car break-ins throughout our community. I urge all residents to remain vigilant, lock their vehicle doors at all times, and avoid leaving valuables, keys, wallets, or other personal belongings visible inside their cars.

I have been in direct contact with the New York State Police regarding these incidents, and we will continue working closely with law enforcement to ensure additional patrols and proactive community policing efforts throughout the Town. Our Wappinger Patrol Division of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office remains actively engaged in patrolling neighborhoods and responding to community concerns.

One incident, let alone two, are far too many to occur in this Town. We have zero tolerance for it. Public safety is a shared responsibility. A proactive response from this government and law enforcement as well as simple preventative measures can make a significant difference in deterring crime.

Residents who notice suspicious activity or who may have information related to these incidents are strongly encouraged to contact the New York State Police immediately.

Together, by staying alert and working cooperatively with law enforcement, we can help keep our neighborhoods safe and protect our community.

Wappinger proudly hosted our annual Wappinger Senior Living Expo!

A wide variety of vendors, organizations, agencies, and community partners - including our own Town departments - came together to provide valuable information, resources, programs, and services for our older adult residents.

From healthcare and wellness to housing, recreation, transportation, and support services, the event offered seniors and their families an opportunity to connect with organizations dedicated to enhancing quality of life in our community.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and helped make this year’s Senior Living Expo another great success for the residents of Wappinger!

At the Town of Wappinger, we’re invested in the enrichment of our seniors, the wellness of the community, creating new friendships, and having fun! 

We have art class, bingo, bocce, book club, bridge club, bus trips, chair volleyball, chair yoga, chess, educational seminars, exercise class, gardening club, knitting & crochet group, lunch and a movie, mahjongg, Mexican trains, monthly crafts, monthly birthday parties, pinochle, pokeno, quilting, rummikub, zumba, and so much more! What an Incredible Wappinger Community Day 2026 at Brexel-Schlathaus Park!🎆

From the parade, floats, games, live music, amazing food, fireworks, and even a musket firing demonstration, the entire day was filled with community spirit, hometown pride, and unforgettable memories.

Families, friends, neighbors, and visitors came together to celebrate everything that makes Wappinger such a special place to call home.

As we proudly honored the upcoming 250th Anniversary of American Independence, the energy, patriotism, and unity throughout the park reminded us just how strong our community truly is - plus you got to see me dressed as a Continental Army General!

Thank you to all of our neighbors who attended, performed, organized, and helped make this one of the best Community Days yet. Wappinger showed up in a big way yesterday, and it was absolutely amazing! 🇺🇸🎇

The Town of Wappinger hit 151 years old on May 20^th!🎉

#OnThisDate 151 years ago, in 1875, the New York State legislature officially created the “Town of Wappinger”. Residents of what was then the northern portion of the Town of Fishkill petitioned the State to create its own separate Town.

Wappinger, the youngest and yet second most densely populated Town in Dutchess County has seen much growth, heroism, and success over the course of our history. On behalf of Town Supervisor Joseph D. Cavaccini, the Wappinger Town Board, the Office of the Town Historian, and all the officials and employees of the Town, Happy 151st Birthday Wappinger!! 🎂

"Heroism doesn't always happen in a burst of glory. Sometimes small triumphs and large hearts change the course of history."

On days such as #MemorialDay, the most solemn holiday on our calendar, we reflect on these great heroes from the Town of Wappinger who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Heroes such as Ensign Alexander Joseph Butsko, PFC Kenneth Arthur Brown, Major Daniel Martz, and Sergeant Mark C. Palmateer. Supervisor Cavaccini had the great opportunity to speak and participate at the Roy C. Ketcham High School, New Hamburg Yacht Club, Chelsea Yacht Club, Village of Wappingers Falls, Hughsonville Fire Company, and Town of Wappinger ceremonies this week.

As we celebrate our Nation’s 250th anniversary of independence, we remember the centuries of brave men and women who have answered the call to serve our great country.

These individuals had their lives cut short in defense of our country and we thank God for their service.

A Special Thank You to Our Local Heros!

In recognition of International Firefighters' Day, the Town of Wappinger extends its most sincere appreciation to our volunteer fire companies serving and protecting the great Town of Wappinger.

The brave men and women who volunteer for the Chelsea, Hughsonville, and New Hackensack Fire Companies, as well as the Village of Wappingers Falls Fire Department are commended for their dedication to our community.

***Wappinger Town Board Proclaims May as Mental Health Awareness Month in the Town of Wappinger***

Town Supervisor Joseph D. Cavaccini and the Wappinger Town Board are proud to recognize May as Mental Health Awareness Month.

The Town of Wappinger calls upon citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, and schools in Wappinger to recommit our community to increasing awareness and understanding of mental health, the steps our citizens can take to protect their mental health, and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental health conditions.

The Town is proud to also partner with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) during the month of May to place white ribbons throughout the Wappinger Town Hall campus, Roy C. Ketcham High School, the downtown historic district of the Village of Wappingers Falls, as well as other significant locations throughout the Town to further the stop the stigma campaign.

Frances “Franny” Reese Memorial Bridge crossing over the Hunter Creek at our Reese Park Town Nature Preserve

This morning, we continued our theme of “connecting” our community as I was proud to welcome our neighbors to the dedication of the former Supervisor Louis Diehl Memorial Trailhead and brand new Frances “Franny” Reese Memorial Bridge over the Hunter Creek at our Reese Park Town Nature Preserve.

Following our 2024 acquisition of the South Avenue property, the Town cleaned up the property to make it accessible to the public through my first Executive Order and began efforts to restore the bridge crossing over the Hunter Creek. Thanks to funding from the Hudson River Valley Greenway, the Town fabricated a new bridge to connect the new trailhead property to the remainder of the Park. All site worked was spearheaded and donated by resident Bill Schwiebert at no cost to taxpayers - Thank you all!!

Today’s festivities included two ribbon cuttings; a special appearance from my former colleague in the Office of the Town Historian, daughter of Former Supervisor Diehl - Brenda Von Burg; a nature walk through Reese Park; and a glass eel nature study hosted by NYS DEC.

Highway Roadway Paving Update

Our Wappinger Town Highway Dept. has been hard at work improving our community and delivering real results for residents.

This season alone, our crews just finished paving 20 roads across town as part of our continued commitment to strengthening and modernizing our infrastructure. But infrastructure means more than just paving roads. From critical drainage improvements to water and sewer projects!

We’re also proud of our commitment to fully fund the replacement of nearly 200 Hometown Heroes banners throughout our community. These beautiful tributes honoring our local veterans are now being installed just in time for Community Day and Memorial Day — a fitting reminder of the brave men and women from Wappinger who have served our nation.

Thank you to our Highway Department and all of our dedicated members of the Wappinger Town workforce helping move this community forward every single day.

@HomeDepotFoundation Generously Donates Shrubs, Trees, and Plants to the Friends of Carnwath Farms Historic Site & Park

We are excited to announce that the @HomeDepotFoundation has generously donated shrubs, trees, and plants to the Friends of Carnwath Farms Historic Site & Park to complete the entry garden landscape improvement project at Carnwath Farms Historic Site & Park.

This installation went in on Wednesday, May 20th starting at 9 a.m. at no cost to taxpayers.

The work doesn’t stop when it’s raining!

The Town Board is proud to have fully funded the replacement of our Hometown Heroes Banners, being the only Town in the region to do so!

The new banners have been delivered! You can see the nearly 200 banners along our “Hometown Heroes Corridor” down Middlebush Road, Myers Corners Road, and our “Walk of Heroes” at Brexel-Schlathaus Park. These banners are certainly a welcomed sight and we are proud of our neighbors for their service.

We are also extremely excited for our partnership with Kohlmaier Property Management for their generous donation of a brand new courtyard at Carnwath Farms Historic Site & Park (at no cost to taxpayers) for our residents to enjoy! This new space will feature gardens and greatly enhance this beautiful property!

Our Buildings and Grounds Department was also hard at work prepping the Tyler Adams Soccer Pitch at Martz Field for a new grass installation thanks to a donation by Scott’s Miracle Grow to completely transform the field.

Supervisor Cavaccini Celebrates #ILoveMyParkDay

We kicked things off with the official dedication of “The Gardens at Mesier Park”, which was the product of a very generous donation from my friend John DiDomizio. Just when you thought Mesier Park couldn’t look any better!

We hosted over 100 guests for our Town’s first American Girl Doll Tea Party at The Chapel at Carnwath Farms Historic Site & Park! Special shoutout to Sara Dobbins and our Town staff for putting together a beautiful day for our Town’s youth!

The Sports Museum of Dutchess County also hosted their 2026 season opening day festivities and are now open each weekend from 1-4 at Carnwath!

And finally we checked out the finished product of our newly 100% complete Live Performance Stage at Brexel-Schlathaus Park! The dance floor and amphitheater style seating are finished and now complemented by beautiful new river birch trees, just in time for Wappinger Community Day on Saturday, May 16th!
